Item Description
This and the following Cleveland mate are exceptionally large pieces each designated in DeWitt as item “1” to lead off his sections on campaign medals. Each piece is made of pressed wood and each has an outer applied edge of red velvet fabric. At the top of each is a fixed metal loop plus a moveable brass ring. On this Blaine example the loop has a little surface corrosion and the circular ring is partly bent out of shape. The velvet border on the Blaine is somewhat darker in tone than on the following Cleveland but still in complete and Fine condition. The back of each piece is cardboard covered in a thin layer of red flocking. Reverse on the Blaine is darker than that on the Cleveland and the cardboard has a couple of surface hairlines but remains 95% intact. The front of each piece depicts jugate portraits with the candidates’ name and “1884” date below. At the top an eagle with arrows and shield holds a ribbon inscribed “E Pluribus Unum.” The wood of the Blaine piece is a little darker than on the following Cleveland but overall this Blaine piece is about Very Fine. The overall size is 3-1/8” in diameter by about .25” thick. Scarce. Don & Mildred Wright Collection.
