Item Description
Hake #3008. 3.5x5x1.75" tall rainbow colored heavy cardboard with padded velvet pin cushion on the lid featuring two leaf designs, two American flags and motto "Adams Forever." Some loss of the red lettering but about 75% remains and words are readable. As typical, lid is separated along the thin paper hinge. Box sides bulge outwards as designed rather than being straight. Under the lid and under glass is 2.5x4" paper portrait titled "John Q. Adams." At far left a .25" triangular piece was pulled loose by the glass but is present. At right is a 1" hairline well away from the image. Underside has beautiful ink inscription: "Miss R.S. Anderson/Presented By J.H./Thomas April 18th/1830." Scarce and much favored by collectors of early display items as these boxes were among the first items produced to promote presidential candidates. Hake 2004 Guide value of $2,500.00. Julie Powell Collection.
