Item Description
Both are on “Chicago Sun-Times” stationery. First is 8.5x11” handwritten in black ink dated “9-25-63” to “Al” (likely early original art collector Abe Paskow). Reads “You Don’t Really Have To Reciprocate, But If You Insist I’ll Be Very Proud To Have An Opper. I’ve Always Admired Him. Regards Bill Mauldin”. Second letter is 7.25x10.5” typewritten dated “June 25, 1970” to Sy Schechter. He declines to send an original, noting “ I Am Not Going To Be Able To Leave My Children An Estate, I Feel That The Least I Can Do Is Leave Them A Pile Of Old Cartoons”. Signed “Bill Mauldin” in ballpoint pen. Both have lt. handling folds as mailed, otherwise Near Exc. Two different 1974 typewritten letters from Mauldin’s secretary come along. Bill Mauldin (1921-2003) was noted for his portrayal of the average enlisted man in WW2, notably “Willie And Joe”, and Lincoln’s statue weeping upon hearing the news of the JFK assassination. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1945 and 1959. Comes w/Hake’s COA. Schechter Family Collection.
