Item Description
14x22". c.1937. Silk screen on cardboard poster with a striking rendering of the plays main character 'Brutus Jones' dominating the top right. Additional text at top left "WPA Federal Theater Avery Memorial Oct. 21-22-23". Text at bottom left "A Conn. W.P.A. Craft Poster Property Of U.S. Gov't." In an effort to help unemployed artists find work the WPA employed over 5000 around the country to produce many thousands of posters. Despite these massive numbers few have survived. Wear at corners most significant is a 2" long light moisture stain at lower left. Reverse has tape reinforcement to lower left corner. Otherwise only faint edge toning and light handling creases consistent with age. Fine. Rare.
