Item Description
The Edison Standard Phonograph was a real breakthrough in the middle range market of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Introduced in early 1898, it proved to be a durable machine that both performed and sold well. As tastes and customer demands changed, the model types changed as well. They were made in great quantities and are often the first choice for entry-level cylinder machine collectors today. The Edison Company discontinued open horn phonographs (including the Standard) in late 1913. Offered here is a c. 1905 "2 Clip" Model A w/patent plate bearing "402966" serial number. The Model A was introduced in Feb., 1898, but this is a later version. Case itself is oak and measures 9x13x11.25" tall (13.25" tall to top of handle w/wooden grip). Case lid lifts off when two metal latches are released on left/right sides. "Edison" name emblazoned on front of case's base. Comes w/original wooden handled hand-crank and 14.75" long metal phonograph horn w/6-7/8" dia. opening. Horn shows scattered wear w/some small indents and paint wear. Fine. Phonograph case shows lt. wear and mechanics within show scattered dust soiling w/wear to facsimile "Thomas A. Edison" signature on front plate. Phonograph works and is VF overall. As a bonus, phonograph comes w/five cardboard phonograph cylinder record canisters. Four are "Edison Gold Moulded Records" brand while fifth is "Oxford Indestructible Cylinder Record. All but one of the Edison canisters contains original cylinder record. Titles include - "Fisher's Hornpipe Medley, Pretty Dick Polka, Colleen Bawn" and "Last Day Of School At Pumpkin Center." Cardboard canisters show aging/wear and are VG/Fine overall. One record has tiny chip out of edge, but overall cylinders are Exc.
