Item Description
32" tall overall, figure stands on wooden base and was likely for store counter window display. Early 1900s. Molded cardboard hands and head have been covered in papier-maché and painted. Molded cardboard feet have just paint. Arms are thick wire w/two wooden dowels at forearm and at wrist to give arms some thickness. Legs are tape-wrapped (some appearing to have been added at a later date) most likely to reinforce them. Fabric jacket has heavy fade and both it and vest (which is faded to a somewhat lesser degree) show wear w/all-over small holes and snags. Fabric ribbon/tie about neck shows obvious wear w/fraying. Printed pattern fabric pants shows heavy and obvious wear/fading w/large splits/tears. Outfit is Poor. Separate head (w/metal rod housing attached on underside - w/one replaced screw) rests on metal rod extending from Happy Hooligan's body. This rod is connected to an inner clockwork mechanism which is working, comes w/replacement brass key. Mechanism causes head to move. This motion in turn causes Happy's wire arms to move. Head and hands have some aging and dust soiling, w/some flaking to head, most noticeable around mouth, eyebrows, tips of ears and to edges of hats. Just Good overall.
