Item Description
5.75x8.5" hardcover w/180 pages and original dustjacket. This is first edition published by Harper & Row, ©1958. Book chronicles the life story of Gibson (1927-2003), an American tennis player and professional golfer, and the first black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis. In 1956, she became the first person of color to win a Grand Slam title (the French Open). The following year she won both Wimbledon and the US Open, winning both again in 1958. In all, she won 11 Grand Slam tournaments, including six doubles titles, and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame. Gibson has signed in blue ink on frontispage, adding "Best Wishes" inscription. This was a school library copy, as noted by stamp on top of pages. DJ has spine fade w/1" area of surface paper lift w/color touch-up on front. Lower right corner of front has .25" tear. DJ has been clipped inside front. VG. Book itself has glue marks from removal of library card sleeve and has aged taped stains. Book shows lt. wear and is Fine overall while signature remains Exc. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA COA.
