Item Description
First is DeWitt 1864-25, brass and 15/16” with his portrait and name on the front. Reverse shows eagle and reads “The Union Must And Shall Be Preserved.” DeWitt notes the reeded edge and the reverse design were designed to simulate official gold pieces and that some copies have a heavy coat of gilt to give them the appearance of gold as does this example. Near flawless. Next is 1.25” lustrous white metal with his portrait on the front and with satirical inscription on each side. Caption below portrait is “Candied-Date” with surrounding text “General G(un) B(oat) McClellan For ‘Anything’ Sweet.” Reverse outer edge reads “Your ‘Orpheus-C. Kerr”/Very Little ‘Mac’” with center text “I Couldn’t Be President In 1865/But I’ll Be ‘Big Injun’ In 1877/I’ll Be Governor Of New Jersey! Hooray!!!” Tiny luster loss and a couple of faint small scratches on the front but overall Exc. Two choice tokens. Julie Powell Collection.
