Auction #216 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 977 in auction 216
Item Description
1.25". Features conjoined portraits with names beneath reading "J. S. Thurmond, Pres." and "F. L. Wright, V. Pres." with text around rim "States Rights The Constitution". Thurmond formed the 'States Rights Democratic Party', often referred to as the Dixiecrats, to splinter from the national Democratic Party due to intervention by the Truman administration on matters involving Jim Crow laws and racial segregation. Thurmond was able to gain control of the Democratic Party in the deep South including keeping Truman's name off the ballot in several states. In the end Truman still won re-election but Thurmond had won four states and tallied 39 electoral votes. This is the only button from that campaign that pictures both men. Tiny light grey dot right at the center base of the portraits in the cream background otherwise only four more similar dots contained to the extreme edges and nearly invisible. Other examples of this button we have encountered have similar dots with the present example being superior to those known to us. Retains full gloss and almost no surface wear even in reflected light. A choice example that is likely un-improvable. NM. Among the most highly sought third party buttons of any campaign.
