Item Description
7/8" with Eagle Regalia, NYC. backpaper. Outer rim reads "Negro & White Workers Unite/Scottsboro United Front Defense." For two decades after the Scottsboro Boys were falsely accused of gang raping two white women they were embattled in the court system of Alabama fighting for their lives. The case is an important early domino in the civil rights movement and a glaring representation of the injustices African Americans faced. This button was likely issued by the International Defense League, the legal arm of the Communist party, who became involved when the NAACP moved slowly fearing an impact on their own effectiveness in the face of the sensational charges. Almost no surface wear with full gloss. NM displaying Mint.
