Item Description
Complete story art for illustrated paperback written by Frank Jacobs w/art by Jack Davis, published by Warner Books, 1983. Lot consists of complete pen and ink w/ink wash and crayon shading original art for 21-page story. Art is on 11 thin artboards, ranging from 6.75x11.5" to 11.5x15" w/most artboards having two illustrations, some having three. Story retells classic Aesop's Fable w/comical forest animals providing color commentary and placing bets w/Fox bookie. Race takes place in typical fashion, w/Tortoise winning due to his being slow and steady while Hare relaxed. It is revealed however in this telling of the story, the Tortoise, Hare and Fox worked a scheme together, splitting the profits from the bets three-ways. Final page features "Never Give A Sucker An Even Break" moral. Text and dialog balloons are all paste-overs, which have lt. even aging. Artboards have some lt. handling wear but are VF overall w/Exc. art. Each image has been signed by Davis and art comes w/nine 4x6" color photos of him signing each page. Great content.
