Item Description
10.75x13.5" sheet of animation paper features lead pencil original art depicting a total of 24 head sketches, 12 of which are fully realized images of Superman w/his head in various positions and displaying a number of different expressions. Fleischer Studios' "Superman" cartoons were distributed by Paramount Pictures in the early 1940s and this art was created around that time. Bottom left has large "Superman" name in block letters and lower right has inked name "Ells Barthen," aka Ellsworth Barthen, an assistant animator at Fleischer. Nicely detailed, art shows the amount of preparation that went into making a "Superman" cartoon. Sheet has vertical crease at center and scattered handling wear w/creases , including 2.5" and 7.75" creases at lower right. Upper right has some age spotting, partially affecting top right Superman head image. Fine overall, but art remains clean for the most part and displays VF. All Fleischer Superman art is rare and this is a truly exceptional example. Franco Toscanini Collection.
