Item Description
21-1/8x27-5/8" frame contains acrylic original art for the frontispiece to Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Left Hand Of Darkness," published by Easton Press in 1992. The beautiful solitude of the frozen planet Winter is captured spectacularly in this Freas snowscape, perfectly complimenting Le Guin's novel that introduced readers to Winter's inhabitants, the Gethenians. Kelly Freas (1922-2005) began his career in 1950, w/a cover painting for "Weird Tales." Over the next 40 years he would contribute numerous cover paintings and interior illustrations for many sci-fi and fantasy pulps, paperbacks, digests, magazines and hardcover books. Hired by Al Feldstein in 1956 to produce covers and interiors for "Mad" Magazine, he was Mad's main cover artist from July, 1958 until 1962. Art depicts two tiny fur-clad explorers standing on snowy cliff overlooking vast frozen expanse. Their sled can be seen a short distance away from them and bkg. sky shows several stars. Lower left has been signed and dated by Freas. NM as professionally and attractively double-matted w/complimentary color suede mattes.
