Item Description
13-7/8x14-7/8" black wood frame has 13.25x14.25" opening revealing India ink drawing. Uncle Sam is explaining to an older nurse how younger nurses are needed at the front as teddy bear holds recruiting sign in foreground. Hand-written text at lower right "To Miss Mary Spargo With Great Regard For Her And All The Red Cross Nurses." C.K. Berryman/The Star/Sept. 13, 1942." Lady was a conservative and prominent GOP fund raiser and friend of Ike, Nixon and Goldwater. Her father, John, was a prominent socialist, author and expert on Bennington Pottery. White areas in 1.5" at left and long bottom have scattered light foxing but image is clean and VF overall. A nicely detailed well-drawn example by one of the top political cartoonists of the first half of the twentieth century showing two American icons.
