Item Description
Historically important letter written ten days before the Democratic convention held April 23-May 3, 1860 which ended in a deadlock after 57 ballots. The convention reconvened in Baltimore June 18-23 and nominated Stephen Douglas. 7.5x9.5" paper entirely in his hand headed "Washington 13 April 1860." He begins "My Dear Sir" and text reads: "I Have Received Your Favor Of Yesterday Enclosing A Certificate Of Deposit In The Farmers Bank Of Lancaster To My Credit Of $1,500: I Shall Place In The Hands Of My Old & Valued Friend Arnold Plumer A Letter Requesting Him As An Act Of Duty & Friendship To Myself, In Case Any Member Of The Charleston Convention Should Propose My Name, To Inform That Body That In No Contingency Can I Ever Consent To Become A Candidate For Re-election. With My Kind Regards To Mrs. Swarr, I Remain Very Respectfully Your Friend James Buchanan." Paper has nominal tanning with pair of partial paper stickers on left corners. He notes at end "Turn Over" but reverse is blank except for a tan image of what seems to be bannisters of a staircase as if the paper laid over a photograph for many years. There is a slight show through on top front and down right edge. Margins are tight so trimming is possible but edges are straight. A beautifully executed 4.5" long signature with just very tiny smudge by letter "s." Overall about fine. Easily readable and with historically important content. Comes with Hake's COA.
