Item Description
11.25x14.5" illustration board. Nice large panel showing Statue of Liberty w/open book amidst raging tempest. Liberty wears banner with text "Liberty Of The Press" as waves surge and thunderclouds gather with lightning and text "Futile Attacks" interspersed in clouds. Done in painstaking detail in pen and ink cross-hatching. Signed at lower right corner. "Unscathed" title appears above illustration. Most likely c. 1913-1924, when McCay was employed by William Randolph Hearst at his newspaper "The American" doing editorial cartoons. Edges have some uneveness due to trimming and some light wear but main image remains bright and would frame Exc.
