Item Description
27x40" one-sheet. Printed by The Strobridge Litho. Co., of Cincinnati, OH and New York, NY. c. 1938. Poster features stunning images of "Gargantua - The Largest Gorilla Ever Exhibited" clutching African native in one hand as others flee. Gargantua was a captive lowland gorilla famous in his lifetime (1929-1949) and was credited w/saving Ringling Bros. from bankruptcy. An acid scar on his face gave him a fierce expression, and circus management attracted attention by emphasizing his alleged hatred of humans. Upper left has penciled date in margin. Poster is evenly aged w/pin holes at corners (at top/bottom center margins) and has faint vertical crease at center. Small strip of tape at each corner as once mounted. If matted and framed, would display VF. Great circus poster. Fred Hoffman Collection.
