7/8" with Eagle Regalia, NYC. backpaper. Outer rim reads "Negro & White Workers Unite/Scottsboro United Front Defense." For two decades after the Scottsboro Boys were falsely accused of gang raping two white women they were embattled in the court system of Alabama fighting for their lives. This button was likely issued by the International Defense League, the legal arm of the Communist party, who became involved when the NAACP moved slowly fearing an impact on their own effectiveness in the face of the sensational charges. A couple tiny and faint light gray dots in the cream field at 4 o'clock. Otherwise a clean surface with full gloss. Exc.
