Item Description
1.25" with back paper from San Francisco maker Brunt. Tiny age dot along the reverse collet but the front of the piece is totally clean. Button shows photograph of an apparent sculpture showing seated woman draped in fabric next to a standing child all surrounded by text "Race Betterment Week P.P.I.E. August 4-8, 1915." Eugenics is a set of beliefs and practices aiming to improve the genetic quality of the human population. The idea as a social movement was most popular in the early decades of the 20th century leading to such things as marriage restrictions, segregation, compulsory sterilization, and other restrictive policies and practices. The Race Betterment exhibit was located in the exposition's Palace of Education which proved a star attraction and was awarded a bronze medal. While the main focus of the exposition was the opening of the Panama Canal, exhibits like this also confirmed the idea of white supremacy around the world. Rare and NM displaying Mint.
