Item Description
1.5" tall silvered brass watch fob designed in the shape of the state of New Mexico. The front of the piece is designed as an aerial view of the state. Very tiny text names at least seven different cities including Albuquerque and Carlsbad. There are also fine lines indicating either rivers or perhaps rail lines. In raised larger text on the front is the inscription "Souvenir Of Villa Raid On Columbus, N.M. March 9th 1916." Reverse is covered in raised text "9 Citizens & 7 Soldiers Of 13th Cavalry Killed/Town Looted & Burned/Raiders Driven Into Mexico After 2 Hrs./Fight Leaving More Than 80 Dead." This is followed by tiny text naming the maker Childs of Chicago. Small bit of silver luster loss from the front text and few tiny areas of silvering off the reverse. The July, 1916 edition of the Columbus Courier newspaper documents this piece as being made by a witness of the raid named L.L. Burkhead. The story behind this fob was the subject of the PBS program History Detective, season seven. Rare.
