Item Description
Sizes are 15/16" to 1-1/8" with all items either in copper or brass. All reference numbers are from DeWitt. In the order shown the first three pieces are from the Congressional Elections of 1838. These are DeWitt numbers 3, 8 and 10. The first reads "Executive Experiment" and shows a tortoise with "Sub-Treasury" on its back. Second reads "Webster Credit Current" and shows sailing ship on obverse and wrecked ship on reverse with reference to "Van Buren Metallic Currency 1837." Third has similar obverse but reverse reads "Millions For Defense/Not One Cent For Tribute." Fourth piece is a Hard Times Token showing "Merchants Exchange Wall St. N. York." Reverse reads "Millions For Defense/Not One Cent For Tribute." The next two pieces are Van Buren 1840-6 and 1840-9. The first has portrait and front slogan "The Sober Second Thoughts Of The People Are O.K." Reverse reads "The Independent Sub Treasury The Choice Of The People." Surfaces have some microscopic pitting and the slogans are tiny but text is readable on close inspection. The second Van Buren piece has his portrait and name on the front while reverse shows a scale with "Democrats" out weighing the "Whigs" and the slogan "Weighed In The Balance & Found Wanting." Extremely Fine with very little wear. Next are two examples of Harrison, DeWitt 1840-27, both with three coat buttons but one with larger text. Each has his portrait on the front and log cabin on reverse. Third piece is 1840-30 with front portrait and name while reverse has eagle and slogan "Go It Tip." The last three Harrison items all have the portrait and name on the front while the reverse shows log cabin with the slogan "The People's Choice In The Year 1840." All three are slightly different varieties. The first four pieces show some age and are Good to VG while the 1840 items, except for the first one, are Fine to VF. Don & Mildred Wright Collection.
