Item Description
Sizes are 7/8" to 1-3/8" and all are brass except for the third item a larger size Taylor in white metal and the last item, the largest piece in the group, a white metal piece from an 1860 series designed by G.H. Lovett picturing presidents on the obverse with images of their residence on the reverse. This scarce Buchanan piece is Exc. and with near full luster. The first Henry Clay item is his one token from the 1840 election and it is listed as DeWitt 1840-1. Front has his portrait, with slogan "Henry Clay And The American System." Facial details are very smooth although slogan is bold. Text on back "United We Stand" is worn and incomplete. The second Clay token is DeWitt 1844-36. Front has portrait, name and date while reverse shows balance scales with the "Whigs" outweighing the "Democrats." Fine. Third is a rare white metal token, holed as made, listed as DeWitt Zachary Taylor 1848-12. Each side has numerous small and dark corrosion marks but details remain clear with his portrait and name on the front while reverse has slogan "A Little More Grape Capt. Bragg" along with names of four battles. The dies were cut by C.C. Wright whose name appears on the front edge and this is a smaller approximate reduction of the Congressional Medal awarded to Taylor. This is an original, not one of the restrikes from 1860. Second Taylor item is 1848-17. Name, date and portrait on the front and figure of seated Liberty on the reverse although both sides have very smooth details. Just Good. Next is Taylor 1848-21. Front has portrait, name and names of battles while reverse has eagle with text "United States Of America 1847." Fine. Next is gorgeous NM example of Fremont 1856-14. Front has portrait, name and birth date while reverse has eagle upon a globe and slogan "Our Country." Much luster. Next are two pieces for Fillmore, 1856-4 which has rim hole and 1856-5 which does not. The first has an eagle on reverse and the second has the same eagle but with text below "31 S". Both fronts have his portrait with text "Millard Fillmore For The Whole Country." Both are VF. Next and of a similar design are a pair for Buchanan 1856-9 and 1856-10. The first is holed as made and the second is not. Reverses are the same as the Fillmore tokens and one has the inscription "31.S." and the other does not. Both fronts have his portrait with text "James Buchanan/No Sectionalism." Second piece has small touches of green corrosion but both remain Fine. Last item in the lot is the token showing Buchanan and his residence from the series by Lovett which began with Washington and concluded with Lincoln in 1860. Don & Mildred Wright Collection.
