Item Description
19x23" Crescent illustration board has been matted to 12.5x16.5" w/image area painted in tempera and signed in pencil by Jack Thurston at lower right. Thurston produced many illustrations over his career, including the iconic poster art of Raquel Welch for 1966's "One Million B.C." Art was created to help promote the 1966 Seven Arts Productions film "It!" Released by Warner Bros., the film starred Roddy McDowall, Jill Haworth, and Paul Maxwell. Herbert Leder served as screenwriter, director and producer of the film. Leder also directed other movies including "The Frozen Dead" in 1966 (see item #2358). First released in Great Britain w/US release in 1967, as a double bill w/"The Frozen Dead." This art was used on the press book & herald for the double bill. The film was based on Theodore Sturgeon's story "It" (from the Aug. 1940 issue of "Unknown"), about a swamp creature roaming the countryside and destroying everything in its path. Art features striking image of slimy-looking ghoul w/a missing eye carrying terrified woman in negligee. Lower right side has small pencil note "Bill Gold Charlie Gold Agency For Warner Bros.," referring to poster designer Bill Gold who became head of poster design at Warner Bros. in 1947 and opened B.G. Charles Agency w/his brother to create promotional movie material. Border of board has aged tape around entirety as once used to secure mat. Mat has since come loose and art could be easily re-matted for display. Art is extremely well done and displays bright and Exc.
