Item Description
Large 14.5" tall (to top of stem handled lid) molded papier-mache jack o-'lantern pumpkin. Likely made in Germany, c. 1910. Molded leaf base and removable top. Complete w/original paper eyes, nose and mouth inserts. At some point these have been reinforced w/masking tape on reverse. Likely during the 1920s, the candle holder was removed and replaced w/an electric porcelain light fixture mounted on a wooden block. The amber bulb still lights but the original silk-wrapped cord should be replaced. This fixture could be removed if desired. Front of lantern has had restoration at nose area and body exterior has a few cracks and overall crazing. Base has some missing areas of leaves. Lid has had a small area of restoration, but this blends well. Inside of body has areas of papier-mache added for reinforcement. Heavy paper bottom has a few tears but is still sturdy. VG overall. Despite defects still a wonderful Halloween item for display.
