Item Description
Large and ornate museum-quality 26-1/8x30-1/8" frame contains original pastel art on illustration board that has been professionally double-matted. Main image are measures 13x15.5" and depicts scantily-clad, wide-eyed woman in the arms of a large golden man. This art was for the cover of the June 1937 issue of the "Weird Tales" pulp magazine. Perfectly illustrating John R. Speer and Carlisle Schnitzer's "The Carnal God" cover story in which an evil golden statue comes to life. Art was created by Margaret Brundage (1900-1976), an illustrator and painter remembered chiefly for illustrating "Weird Tales." Working in pastels, she created most of the covers for "Weird Tales" between 1933 and 1938, her style - which frequently featured nearly naked women in danger - became the focus of attention and controversy. As the first female cover artist of the pulp era, Brundage's lush, provocative paintings furthered the appeal of "Weird Tales" amongst consumers. Her pulp art, including the iconic "Bat Woman" cover, helped set the standard against which all other pulp covers are judged. Illustration board has pinholes surrounded by small tack marks at left/right corners, just above and below art. Top and bottom margins have illustrated borders at left/right margin for pulp title at top and story title along w/brief synopsis and creator names at bottom. Art has been signed by Brundage at lower left as it appeared on final cover. Art is Exc. Stunning 1930s pulp art, the nicest example we've offered in our 49 years. Unique, one-of-a-kind piece of art.
