Item Description
The 1920 Summer Olympics (French: Les Jeux olympiques d'été de 1920), officially known as the Games of the VII Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event in 1920 in Antwerp, Belgium. Offered here is a bronze participation medal, measuring 2.25" (60mm) dia. Designed by Pierre Theunis, the obverse features image of Nike standing before trio of victorious athletes w/wreath crown in her hands. Reverse features flying Victory crowning charioteer. Crafted by Coussemans of Belgium. Presented to all competing athletes in the 1920 Olympiad, these medals are among the most elusive early Olympic participation medals to find in high-grade condition today. The vast majority of known examples display varying degrees of cleaning and/or wear. The 1920 Antwerp is also known for its notoriously weak strike. The offered example is truly exceptional, possessing clean, original surfaces and a strike that allows the viewer to truly enjoy this magnificent medal. Medal shows some scattered lt. wear and some rubs to raised high relief designs, VF.
