Item Description
"Alphonse And Gaston" was an American comic strip by Frederick Burr Opper, featuring a bumbling pair of Frenchmen w/a penchant for politeness. They first appeared in William Randolph Hearst's newspaper, "The New York Journal" on Sept. 22, 1901. Offered here is a 6x10.25x9.5" tall painted plaster statue w/inner wire armature. c. 1905. Statue depicts the pair on opposite ends of a table which has a small bottle and glass (both are actual glass) w/incised "You First My Dear Gaston" text on front of base, a comical reference to the characters' politeness. Alphonse has a number of cracks to his thin legs, but they are not fully broken and inner wire armature keeps all structurally sound. Restoration for reinforcement recommended. Scattered paint wear and moderate dust soiling. VG overall. Very rare and the first we've seen in our 49 years. Among the nicest pieces we've seen produced for these early comic characters. Eric Renner Collection and the example shown on page 30 of his book "American Disguise."
