Item Description
Published in "Cracked" c. 1971. Lot consists of complete three-page story on thin artboards measuring 13.75x17.5" w/India ink and ink wash original art by John Severin. "Better Celebrity Dolls" features a very close depiction of Mego's "Broadway Joe Namath" figure they produced in 1970. The detail on first sheet includes images of outfits that very close to those produced for the figure. Given the humorous spin of "Cracked," they have suggested additional features including movie chair, Academy Award "Joe Will Never Win As An Actor," and 26 little black books among other funny items. This sheet has onionskin overlay attached w/red pencil production notes. Second sheet features illustrations of Martha Mitchell and Bela Lugosi as Dracula as well as Richard Nixon w/Spiro Agnew ventriloquist doll that is capable of putting foot in mouth. Last sheet features images of "Howard Hughes Mystery Doll" in box designed like tiny room and small friend doll for Hughes. This sheet also includes a curvy Raquel Welch doll in swimsuit and W.C. Fields doll that comes w/two "Lunch" cocktail shakers for martinis. All titles and text are paste-overs which have aged. Each page has inked note at top w/story name/page number. Margins have some editorial notes. Pin holes at top corners and top center margin. Pages have some lt. even aging/handling wear and upper right of each has tear ranging from 1" to 1.25" w/tape repairs. One tear extends slightly into Lugosi image. Artboards are Fine/VF overall w/Exc. art. Superb graphics throughout w/much humor.
