Item Description
This item is among the very earliest litho tin pins pre-dated by only 3 or 4 Cleveland and Harrison items from 1888. The flat tin sheet is 1-7/16x1.75". Washington portrait at top flanked by flags and the dates "1789-1889." Below is full figure of him in blue smock with red leg stockings standing alongside a felled tree. His arm is white metal and his hand holds a hatchet. The arm has a brass pin through it, extending to the reverse, so that it moves up and down. Text beneath the tree reads "I Can Not Tell A Lie. I Cut It With My Hatchet." About a dozen 1/8" or smaller paint flakes off mostly the left side but they really just show when the piece is held in reflected light and when viewed straight-on they are hardly apparent at all. About 94% overall paint remains. Reverse has hinged 1.75" brass pin plus a metal catch to hold its point. A historic piece issued to celebrate the centennial of Washington's inauguration as president. Fine and Rare.
