Item Description
Text in Catalan, a romance language used in Northeastern Spain reads "Contra El Feixisme Assassi Oposem-Hi El Socialisme Alliberador. Loosely translating to "Against Fascism Killer/Liberating Them Oppose Socialism." At bottom left is "P.O.U.M." initials for the "Workers' Party Of Marxist Unification." The group was active mostly during the Spanish Civil War and was highly critical of Stalin. Author George Orwell fought alongside a POUM militia and the group is discussed in Ernest Hemingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls. Old tape and paper residue on reverse around borders and through center both vertically and horizontally. Extensive fading notably to text and fingernails. Losses to right top and bottom corners. Fair/Good. In our extensive research we could not locate another example of this poster in commerce or in the holdings of an institution. Rare. Ted Watts Collection.
