Item Description
Sizes are 7/8" up to 4". Two of the earliest buttons picturing Uncle Sam both have W&H back papers and are c. 1896-1898. Another early pair, each with covered tin back and vertical pin by maker Baldwin & Gleason advertise "Young Sports Best Boys Paper 5¢" The one in blue is NM displaying Mint while the red one has faded but remains clean. There is also another rare button showing man with rifle issued for the publication "Sporting Life." This has W&H back paper from 1900-01 which has some penciling and the button itself has tan age but retains full color and high gloss. Two other early buttons in the top row are from the Chicago American promoting "Complete Base Ball Scores In Chicago" (this is 1.25" c. 1908) and one at 1.75" with slogan "Everybody Reads The Base Ball Bulletin." This has Bastian paper used only in 1908. Small dent on upper left side edge with front displaying cleanly. Six additional buttons advertise the Philadelphia Bulletin with five referencing their sports coverage. The 4" celluloid has a metal spring clip on the back rather than a pin. Likely worn by a newsboy and promoting "Late Baseball Scores In The New York Herald Tribune Early Bird Edition." First we've seen. VF/Exc. with exceptions noted. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
