Item Description
First is 1.25" button without dot pattern picturing him in uniform with football tucked under his arm. With magnification, the lettering on the football can be seen as "Illini." However, the text on the button rim reads "Chicago Bears." Grange captained the Illinois team in 1925 and left college immediately after his final game to tour with the Chicago Bears. His career then took him other places, but he rejoined the Bears in 1929 and played with them through 1934. We don't know for certain this button is as early as 1925 but it certainly falls within the 1929-1934 era. Button has no back paper as issued and just a little oxidation over the metal back. The celluloid is clean and glossy with just traces of trivial surface wear showing only under magnification. Exc. One of the rarest and best of all football-related buttons. Our one previous example from the Potter-Hake collection exceeded $800 in Auction #180. With this rare button come three additional 1.25" buttons each reading "Chicago Bears." These are c. late 1920s into the 1930s. The first which pictures a bear has dark stain around the outer rim edge but the remaining 90% of this button is clean and the other two are NM displaying Mint.
