Item Description
2x2-5/8" Cuban card issued as a premium by Billiken brand cigars. Cards in this set feature players from the 1923-24 Cuban Professional League. The set includes 15 cards each for the four teams that participated that season: Almendares, Habana, Marianao, Santa Clara. Glossy front features a bw photo, player's name and team. The back of the card has an ad for "Billiken." Cards in this elusive set are among the scarcest and most popular of the pre-war Cuban issues.
A southpaw off a Missouri farm, Oscar Fuhr pitched big-league ball for parts of two seasons and all of a third in the majors, 1921 with the Chicago Cubs and 1924-25 with the Boston Red Sox. The Cubs finished seventh and his Red Sox teams finished seventh and eighth. Fuhr was 0-0 with Chicago and 3-12 with Boston. He played for the Almendares of the Cuban league in the 1923-24 season and went 5-7 in 18 games, 9 of those being complete games which led the league. This card is graded 50 VG/EX 4 and is designated by SGC as being from the "Richard Merkin Collection" and comes with Hake's COA.
