Item Description
1-5/8x2-3/8" Cuban cards were distributed in packs of Diaz cigarettes. The cards in this set feature players from the 1923-1924 Cuban Professional League. 84 cards are in the set, the largest and one of the scarcest of all 1920s Cuban card issues. Cards are numbered 1-83 and 85, no card #84 is known. Card fronts are printed in dark brown w/photos and names while backs include card number and description of the series w/offer for an album.
Edward "Slim" Love played in MLB for several teams including the Washington Senators (1913), the New York Yankees (1916-18), and the Detroit Tigers (1919-20) with a career line of 28-21, 3.04 ERA, and 251 strikeouts. He did spend a single season in the Cuban Winter league, which is reflected on this card, but had a less than stellar season splitting his time between Marianao and Habana in the 1923-24 season with a Win/Loss record of 0-5 through 13 games between both clubs. "Slim" Love, upon his debut in the majors, became the tallest pitcher in the history of the game at 6'- 7.5", a record he held for 69 years. This card is SGC graded 10 Poor 1 and is designatedby SGC as being from the "Richard Merkin Collection" and comes with Hake's COA.
