Item Description
29mm. Copper. Text around rim reads "T. Spence Imprisoned 7 Months For High Treason" w/bust portrait at center and "1794" below. Text "James" references the diesinker. Thomas Spence was an English radical who advocated for communalization of land in England. During his life he published works on the subject of common ownership of lands and advocated for the end of land ownership and land Lords. He produced a large variety of propaganda tokens including this one celebrating his own imprisonment for sedition. Reverse has a seated Britannia holding a staff w/a liberty cap falling from its perch and text "Rouse Britannia!" Sharp details and only minor surface wear. VF. Ted Watts Collection.
