Item Description
Pair of 1.5" buttons issued by 1964 group formed to protest racial exclusion by the all-white Mississippi Democratic Party at the 1964 Democratic National Convention who had a major part in Freedom Summer. First reads "Move On Over Party." Extremely faint light toning in background. VF. Second has additional text at center "FDP." Light brown staining around circumference. Fine. The group attempted to be seated as a legitimate delegation at the 1964 DNC and expected the support of LBJ but he feared a general walk-out by southern Democrats and opposed the seating of the MFDP. Humphrey offered a compromise but this was rejected by the group. The group's delegates staged a sit-in on the convention floor but were removed by security guards and left the convention feeling betrayed. Historic and scarce. Ted Watts Collection.
