Item Description
Pair of 16.5x22.5" thin artboards w/pen and ink original art for 1957-1958 Sunday pages. Art is by Joe Musial, who took over art duties on the Sunday page from Charles Winner upon his death in 1956. Musial was the third artist on "The Katzenjammer Kids," though the characters were featured in two differently titled strips due to a series of legal battles between creator Rudolph Dirks and the Hearst newspaper syndicate, which resulted in "The Katzenjammer Kids" artist Harold Knerr continuing that strip while Dirks continued w/his strip "The Captain And The Kids." Art is for July 28, 1957 and Dec. 21, 1958. First panel is paste-over title stat. Strips features Hans and Fritz as well as Mama, der Captain and der Inspector. First page features Captain, Inspector and the boys buying a fur coat for mama, only for a bear to fall in love and chase her when she puts it on. Second page features Hans and Fritz about to launch a rocket labeled "Moon Or Bust" before being scolded by Mama as rocket blasts through fence, revealing loafing Captain. Art has some production notations and printing marks along margin as well as some scattered handling wear/dust soiling and moderate aging to margin edges. Pinholes at top corners. Fine overall, but art remains clean and Exc. and would make for nice display if framed.
