Item Description
4.75" long unused clay pipe marked on the stem "Scotland." On the bowl one side depicts "Tom Sayer" in a boxing stance within a ring while the opposite side depicts "J.C. Heenan" also with raised fists and standing in a boxing ring. Heenan was the American and Sayers was English with the pair fighting the first international boxing championship at an outdoor ring near Farnborough, Hampshire, England. The historic event took place on the morning of April 17, 1860. While the event was illegal, sporting historians accept that this fight was the one and only true beginning of international 'World Title' competition. The match lasted two hours and 27 minutes. The fight ended as a draw after 42 rounds and police stormed the ring. The pipe is in unused and essentially Mint condition.
