Item Description
Original 5-3/8x6-7/8" cardboard mat contains original Stevengraph (pictures woven from silk, originally created by Thomas Stevens in the 19th Century) of American boxer in classic 19th Century pugilistic pose, an American flag sash around his waist. One of a series of four of famous bare knuckle fighters of the period produced by Stevens in 1888. Sullivan is recognized as the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing, holding the title from Feb. 7, 1882 to 1892. He is generally recognized as the last heavyweight champion of bare-knuckle boxing under the London Prize Ring Rules. Printed text on mat below Stevengraph reads "Woven In Pure Silk By T. Stevens, Coventry." Back is missing majority of printed label. Mat shows obvious aging along top and right margins w/upper right corner tip off. Mat is VG overall, but Stevengraph remains clean and Exc.
