Item Description
7/8" w/W&H back paper used in 1901. Features a striking portrait of Taylor in racing uniform w/text around circumference. Taylor was among the most celebrated cyclists of his generation and among the most dominant athletes in any sport of his era. Despite his abilities, the American Wheelman changed their bylaws to exclude African American cyclists from joining. Taylor was still allowed to compete in races but faced serious racism from competitors, including an incident where he was choked unconscious during a race. He retired from the sport in 1910 citing exhaustion and fatigue from the prejudice, and in his self published biography advised African American children to practice fair play, clean living and good sportsmanship in addition to maintaining strong willpower and physical courage. Traces of surface wear in reflected light. Exc. displaying Mint as made. A rare turn of the century artifact featuring one of the most notable African American sportsmen of his time.
