Item Description
11.5x16.75" raised copper relief depicts full body image of John L. Sullivan, who is recognized as the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing, holding the title from Feb. 7, 1882, to 1892. Sullivan is generally recognized as the last heavyweight champion of bare-knuckle boxing under the London Prize Ring Rules. Bottom right has incised "John L. Sullivan" facsimile signature and "1886" date. This piece dates to Sept. 1890 as noted by notation on shellacked cardboard back. "H.A.S." artist initials at lower left. Left/right center margins have some line impressions to thin copper and display has some scattered edge/corner tip wear. Fine overall.
