Item Description
Spence was an English radical who advocated for communalization of land in England. He wrote many pamphlets and produced tokens, often satirical, in collaboration with the diesinker "James". This one is .75" brass. Obverse shows wild pig trampling symbols of monarchy with a Liberty Cap above. Text "Pig's Meat Published By T. Spence London". Pig's Meat was the name of his penny weekly publication and the title is a play upon a reference of Edmund Burke's to "The Swinish Multitude". Opposite side dated 1795 with names of "Thos. Spence/Sir Thos. More/Thos. Paine" all enclosed by "Advocates For The Rights Of Man".  See next three items #2-4. Exc. Ted Watts Collection.
