Item Description
8.5x10-7/8" typed letter on "Independent News Co., Inc. of New York City is dated Oct. 18, 1939 and is addressed to wholesaler, promoting "Action Comics." Letter mentions enclosed "Circular" (see below) to be distributed amongst retail dealers. Letter mentions Superman and stresses his appearances in "Action Comics," noting "We Are Not Sure The Dealers Have Learned To Distinguish Between Action Comics And Other Comic Books With Similar Covers Or Names." Letter has penciled date at top and has been folded as mailed. Pinholes at top left w/lighter strip along bottom margin. Fine/VF. Comes w/8-3/8x10-3/8" sheet that has wonderful art believed to have been done by Whitney Ellsworth showing boy running up to newsstand saying "Say Mister! I Want To Buy The Magazine With Superman!" as the news dealer says "Then You Want A Copy Of Action Comics! Superman Appears In Action Comics Each And Every Month!" Lower left has Joe Shuster-inspired image of Superman w/o cape and lower right has "Action Comics" comic book title logo. "Superman Is The Leading And Most Popular Comic Strip In The Country. This Feature Appears Each Month In Action Comics" text at top w/"Superman Sales Demand Front Display For Action Comics" at bottom. Illustration features various comic books visible on rack, including "All-American" (first published in April, 1939), Detective Comics, Adventure Comics, More Fun Comics" in addition to "Action Comics." Flier dates to Fall 1939. Flier has evenly aged and top margin has a few faint moisture spots and tiny nick at left. Both left corners have tiny tips off. Upper left margin also has tiny nick. Fine. In light of recent extraordinary sales of "Action Comics" #1, it is important to note that there are far fewer of this flier known as opposed to existing copies of "Action Comics" #1. This flier was only sent to a select few newsstand dealers/distributors and is exceedingly rare. Letter is the first example we've seen while the flier is only the third example we've offered in our 50 years. Superb design and historic. Franco Toscanini Collection.
