Item Description
Offered here is extensive lot of mostly 8.5x11" paper items related to the popular 1941 Superman Bread promotion (see previous item #1819) that featured premium picture card inserts in bread loaves. Four-page contract issued by The George N. Graf Company (a single contract alone sold for $885 in our March 2012 auction and is the only other example we've offered in our 50 years) reads in part "The Exclusive Right To Use 'Superman' Bread Wrappers, Promotional And Advertising Material Including 'Superman' Bread Truck Posters, Window Posters, Window Strips, Bread Badges, Display Easels, Bread Shelf Strips, And Any Other Campaign Material Adopted By Superman, Inc. In Connection With The Sale Of 'Superman' Bread And For No Other Purpose." Two inside pages are divided into 14 sections w/various stipulations including telling baker where to get Superman wrappers printed and noting a licensing royalty of 10¢ per 100 wrappers. Back cover lists 24 items available including Junior Defense League handbills, membership cards and badges as well as various posters, Superman Adventures inserts and more. Lot also includes two "Superman Bread Special Bulletin" typed sheets; one noting Superman Junior Defense League of America w/the other noting different forms of advertising; advertising order form, three ad mats (showing various Superman images, bread cards as well as image used for club badge), two sheets showing prototype format for promotional letters and two photo prints showing two different rare displays of Superman Bread; one noting Superman Junior Defense League on front. All are file copies from a company book as most have glue staining on reverse. Some scattered edge/handling wear. Paper ranges from Fine to VF overall. Aside from the contract, the rest of the items in this lot are either first we've offered or first we've seen in our 50 years. An amazing group of material giving much insight into this very successful campaign. Franco Toscanini Collection.
