Item Description
Pete Candoli was a Big Band trumpeter w/Woody Herman's orchestra who was well-known for dressing as Superman during his trumpet solos in the mid-1940s. Lot includes 3.5x5.5' real photo postcard of Candoli in full Superman outfit, striking a heroic pose. Front has facsimile "Sincerely Pete 'Superman' Candoli" inscription/signature. Unused and Exc. Andrew J. Paris was the first business to mass produce bubblegum after World War II, becoming an overnight success and being dubbed "The Bubble Gum King Of America" by "Life" magazine in 1947. Original mailing envelope w/"From: Superman And The Bubble Gum King Of America" return address contains 8x10" fan photo of Paris w/his facsimile signature (including his moniker). Photo shows some lt. scattered aging and lt. edge wear including tiny nick at upper left. VF. Envelope has not been addressed or mailed and shows moderate wear w/archival tape repair to end flap tears. VG. Both the Candoli postcard and Paris fan photo are rare, w/both examples being the first of either esoteric item we've offered in our 50 years. Definitely an interesting pair for the Superman collector. Franco Toscanini Collection.
