Item Description
11.5x16.5"and 2.25x4". Albumen print on cardboard mount w/rounded corners and text "Mrs. Woodhall (Broker.)" Minor wear to print, Exc. Vol. I No. 24 of "Woodhull & Claflin's Weekly" newspaper carrying the slogans "Progress! Free Thought! Untrammeled Lives!" and "Breaking The Way For Future Generations." Paper is dated October 29, 1870 two years before Woodhull's historic Presidential nomination. Surface paper lift affecting "Tennie", a .25" dia. hole at right and minor staining and age toning. Overall a nice complete example that remains in Fine condition. Woodhull along w/her sister Tennie were the first female stockbrokers opening their own firm on Wall Street in 1870 w/the patronage of Cornelius Vanderbilt. Woodhull, a suffagist and champion of women's rights, was nominated for President by the Equal Right's Party in 1872 w/Frederick Douglass, who did not attend the convention, nominated as Vice President. She is considered the first woman nominated for President despite her age, 34, not meeting the constitutional requirement.
