Item Description
1.25" high quality real photo button with slogan "Winners Eat Ward's Tip-Top Bread". There is another button from the same issuer and of the same design picturing baseball player Joe DiMaggio. This button pictures early aviation pioneer credited as the highest paid airmail pilot, he flew the first round-trip trans Atlantic flight in 1936 and the following year appeared as himself in the movie "Atlantic Flight". He was Eisenhower's personal pilot during the 1952 election, set several speed records and became Eastern Air Lines most experienced pilot until his retirement in 1961. His famous 1936 flight became known as the "Ping Pong Flight". We know of a third button in this set picturing hockey player Eddie Shore. All three buttons are rare and this is the first example we've seen of Merrill. NM displaying Mint.
