Item Description
1.25" with Bastian paper. Marvelous depiction of ice flows dwarfing two tiny sailing ships against a towering iceberg outlined by a gorgeous sunrise encompassing oval portraits with tiny text "Dr. F. A. Cook" on the left and "Com. R. E. Peary" on the right. Both of their portraits are draped by a pair of American Flags. Issued in the Fall of 1909 when the New York Herald announced on the front page "The North Pole Is Discovered By Dr. Frederick A. Cook" and then a week later the New York Times issued its own front-page headline "Perry Discovers The North Pole After Eight Trials In 23 Years." Since there could only be one "First" this was the start of a controversy that still persists. NM, displaying Mint.
