Item Description
This rare advertising give-away by W&H features a 1.75" celluloid atop three layers of felt, the largest at 3.5" all of which serve to wipe excess ink from metal pen points. There is a 3/8" hairline scratch across the word "Pears'" but this just shows a trifle in reflected light. The piece still displays essentially Mint and is just one of two examples we've seen in 50 years. Depicted is old woman scrubbing behind a young boy's ears with caption along the bottom edge "You Dirty Boy". The edge of the celluloid reads "Pen Wiper Made By The Whitehead & Hoag Co." plus their Newark address and "Pat. Applied For". One felt has small 1/8" tear but the fabric remains in place and does not show at all from the front. c. 1900. Exc. displaying at least NM.
