Item Description
Lafayette came from France to support the American Revolution and became close friends with Washington, Hamilton and Jefferson. This brooch dates from his 1824 return trip to America at the invitation of President Monroe. Lafayette visited all of the then 24 states to great acclaim and many souvenirs were created to commemorate his visit. Few of those souvenirs were wearable and this .75" wide by 1" tall brooch is a rare exception. The brass frame has triangular and circular decorations with a raised oval band holding a glass cover, domed on the perimeter and flat at the center, over a hand-colored portrait engraving.  Reverse has "T" hinge, vertical pin and clasp. Other pieces made the same way exist for 1824 candidates Jackson and J. Q. Adams, as well as Webster. Only a few examples are known for each man.
Only the most minor age traces. Rare and Exc.
